I have a bad case of wanderlust. I dream about where I will travel to next, and when I grow impatient sometimes I just pick up and go. (I am an Aries. I am impetuous. See: Vegas and Paris.) It is a hunger to see the world that just needs satisfying.
But the reality of it is that I have a day job, so every moment can’t be filled with trips and exciting new places. After all these adventures aren’t always cheap!
I realized something the other day that not so long ago San Francisco used to be all things to me. But as the time goes on the Golden Gate Bridge just becomes part of the skyline. They old quaint, charming buildings just become small and annoying. The quirky city people just blend in with the rest. It all just becomes your norm.
It is easy to find happiness in another city when you are visiting for a few days. But when we are home we get so caught up in the minutia of our lives – being stressed about work or thinking about what we have to do at home – that we miss out on the really great stuff around us.
So, this past weekend I took some time to enjoy my city. I took my headphones off and just wandered around. I took in all the sites, the sounds and the smells (okay let’s be honest it wasn’t all roses). This is something I always do when I am traveling, but rarely do in my own city these days.
At the end of it, I felt like I had been on my own great escape, and I remembered why I had fallen in love with this city and moved here nearly five years ago.
So, I guess the tip part is this: cut your city some slack, and take some time to really enjoy all that it offers.
San Francisco...I Love You
